OUR MISSION

Inspiring Leica Photographers to Achieve Their Best

Our vision is to be The Ultimate Place for Leica Photography Enthusiasts

The Leica Legacy

You are invited to join LSI – Leica Society International, a community of Leica enthusiasts. Become a part of preserving the rich history of Leica, from the earliest Barnack to the screwmount Leicas to the iconic M cameras that continue today, improve your skills and join other Leica photographers in the Leica journey. Leica invented 35mm photography more than 100 years ago.  Leica cameras were used by greats such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Man Ray, Alfred Eisenstadt, Diane Arbus, and others to capture some of the great moments in history.  Leica film and digital cameras are still used by great photographers and serious amateurs.

For more than fifty years, LSI has been involved in this history and has been a meeting place for Leica enthusiasts as well as collectors.  Read our acclaimed Viewfinder Magazine four times a year and read about old Leicas, new Leicas, and how to get the most out of them.  Meet other Leica owners and Leica executives and renowned Leica photographers as we meet twice year for photo shoots and instruction.  Get to try out the latest Leica gear at meetings through the Leica-on-Loan program.   Visit our archives of historical information as well as more current information.   Post your own images in our social media channels.   Become eligible for discounts on some repairs and Leica Akademie classes.  Gain access to expertise from our members, learn about your camera, shooting techniques, and become a part of the rich history of Leica photography.

ABOUT

What’s in a Name (Ours)?

People sometimes ask us about our name and logo.

We are the Leica Society International. We are an international organization of Leica users as well as collectors with members from more than 20 countries.

We were founded more than fifty years ago as the Leica Historical Society of America (LHSA).  Just as history plays a large role for Leica cameras, it remains important to us as well.   If you would like more information about us, please email info@lhsa.org

Members’ interests overflow from active hands-on photography to research and documentation of the Leica system, and to collecting cameras, lenses, and accessories made for the system. Attention also is given to literature relating to the system and individuals who use it.

LSI is international in scope, with members countries in the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Australia, who recognize the special distinction that the Leica camera system carries.

The Leica system has been built to the highest standards of manufacturing with meticulous attention to quality and precision. Over the years, various models of the camera have been presented to royalty, presidents, scientists, explorers and others that were recognized for their accomplishments throughout the world. No other camera or precision instrument in history has received such universal recognition.

The society makes every effort to research historical facts concerning the Leica system and to share this information with members through its quarterly journal, Viewfinder, which features articles about the Leica camera and system. Viewfinder offers special information of interest to users, collectors, and historians concerned with the identification and use of cameras and accessories, both old and new. Viewfinder also provides information about worldwide current events relating to Leica. Examples of fine photography with details are present in every issue of Viewfinder.

Membership to LSI is open to all who have a genuine interest in Leica products. Dues are paid when the membership application is submitted. A membership runs for 365 days from the date of joining.

Each fall the LSI holds its Annual Meeting on a rotational basis in various cities throughout the world. Each spring the society holds a Regional Shoot (“Spring Shoot”) which is a smaller and more informal event. The Spring Shoot is also held in various cities, usually within the U.S., that offer venues of photographic interest. The in-person gatherings have offered members the opportunity to gain knowledge of the Leica system and form lasting friendships.

Ian Hamilton*

(Lake Oswego, Oregon) I’ve been in the Sports Marketing business all of my life and spent most of it working at Nike. I’ve been taking pictures ever since high school and have always been interested in the process as well as the result. The first camera I bought was in the summer of 1979. I was running a tennis camp at Lake Tahoe and I bought it over the phone from a dealer in Chicago (Shutan Camera). It was an Olympus OM-1 and I remember how anxious I was for that package to arrive…. until I learned about Leica. It quickly became my aspiration and my first purchase was the first D-LUX. I now carry a D-LUX5, a CL and recently reached my goal of purchasing the M10-R. From the first photo on the M-10, I was amazed at the difference in the image quality from anything I had ever seen before. I’ve enjoyed my membership in the LSI as it has provided me the opportunity to engage in the various webinars which as an amateur photographer, I find incredibly educational and useful. *Note: We owe a debt to Ian for inspiring us to create the Sustaining Member program.

Andy Godlewski

(Middletown, RI) (LSI Member since 2009) (Member - Board of Directors) Andrew has been involved in photography since the age of 13. He currently uses an M-240 and a M2.

He spent years plying the coastal seascapes of WA, OR, CA, using medium format gear, and bought his first (of many) Leicas, a M7 .72 in 2007-also which he still has, and uses today. Gary has a large darkroom and needs time to return to those dark room environments, playing KZOK 102.5FM classic rock, and printing using B&W and alternative processes. He loves to travel to the LSI events for comradery with many LSI friends.

After teaching black and white film photography in the late 1980's at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he began to mix digital images with negatives in the mid-2000's. He still enjoys shooting 35mm film in two a-la-carte Leica MP's (0.58 and 0.85) as well as the Leica R system. His favorite work, however, are landscapes with the Leica S system and SL system. David’s focus is on the interaction of humans in the environment and the evidence we leave behind. He has also done some work in Bayonnais, Haiti to further educational efforts there. While Leica has become his tool of choice, the LSI has been a great personal experience to learn, to share and to meet others around the world.
