Miami - Dawn and Dusk: Feb 21-23, 2020
Chasing the perfect light is a game all photographers play but sometimes, when you let Mother Nature take over, you can create photographs that are simply magical. The soft, dewy light of early morning and the soft luminous glow of evening add a level of mystery and sensuality, imperative in visual storytelling, plus you don’t have to worry about shadows because everything is naturally, evenly lit. Especially in Miami, whether it’s the bright early morning rays that shine through the high rises in Brickell, or the vivid touch of color the light of early evening adds to the vibe of Wynwood and South Beach, every “golden hour” picture will tell a story.
Join the Leica Akademie and Phil Penman as we explore Miami, ” The Magic City”. Phil has photographed Miami for many years and has found that his best visuals come from that short stretch of time when the light is simply stunning during these sunrise and sunset hours. This Leica Akademie experience will take you around the city to explore areas rich in texture when bathed in the dawn of early morning, the light at dusk, and there’s even more light to chase long into the night. Phil will share his creative process from how he sees an image, to how he selects and then edits, the final images.

Who should take this workshop?
Anyone interested in the landscapes and lifestyles of Miami as they are lit by early morning and late evening light. This is also a rare opportunity to get creative insight from Phil.
5:00am is not a misprint. It’s early, but that’s the time that light is the best. You should have a good understanding of your camera as well as an understanding of basic image editing. You can use your own camera and we will have a selection of Leica cameras for your to try over the weekend.

Instructor:
Phil Penman comes from a tranquil village called Briantspuddle located in the county of Dorset, England with only 360 inhabitants and what feels like 30,000 sheep. Today he works as a freelance street photographer in New York City.
Phil had an interest in the visual arts, photography and darkroom at an early age. After studying photography at the Berkshire College of Art and Design, his first job was at The Wokingham Times, a local newspaper published in Berkshire. Penman photographed just about everything, including babies, sheep, and local politicians. Soon after, he received an offer from a photo agency to oversee taking all of the corporate portraits for Microsoft UK.
Wanting more opportunities to express himself creatively, Phil set out for the United States and landed in Los Angeles, where he worked for a celebrity news agency photographing living legends such as Jennifer Lopez, Bill Gates and Christopher Reeve. Six months later, the agency sent him to New York to establish an office there.
Phil has covered the biggest entertainment and news stories in America, including the September 11th World Trade Center terrorist attacks, for which his work won worldwide recognition. Since then, he has focused on documenting a broad spectrum of New York life. Phil’s work has been exhibited at the Leica Gallery in New York City and has been featured in Leica Fotografie International. He currently travels across the world photographing assignments for a diverse range of clients including popular lifestyle magazines like: People and Hello as well as British newspapers: The Independent, Daily Mirror, The Sun, Daily Mail, Daily Telegraph and The Guardian. In the United States, you will see his images in American newspapers such as, USA Today and The New York Post.
