Maggie Steber is a Guggenheim Foundation Fellow, 2017-2018, and has worked in 70 countries photographing stories on the human condition. She was named as one of eleven Women of Vision by National Geographic magazine. Other honors include Pulitzer Prize Finalist 2019, the President’s Award from the Overseas Press Club, the Lucie Award for Photojournalism 2019, Leica Medal of Excellence, World Press Photo Foundation Awards, Pictures of the Year Awards, Medal of Honor for Distinguished Service to Journalism from the University of Missouri, the Alicia Patterson Grant, the Ernst Haas Grant, and a Knight Foundation Grant.
Steber worked as a photo editor for Associated Press and Director of Photography at The Miami Herald, andas a contract photographer for Newsweek Magazine. She is affiliated with VII Photo Agency and lives in Miami, FL.
Sandra Eisert is the only White House picture editor to work for three previous U.S. presidents. She was the picture editor for three major newspapers, is a former National Press Photographers Association Newspaper Picture Editor of the Year, has judged World Press Photo, Pictures of the Year, and Society for News Design international competitions. She has been an editor, designer, and/or strategist for well over 100 visual books and also made key contributions to Pulitzer Prize-winning coverage for Silicon Valley’s San Jose Mercury News. Sandra also designed and was one of the founders of the first real internet news website, Microsoft’s MSNBC.com, which changed the face of the internet and picture use on it.
Ana Maria Arevalo Gosen, was born in Caracas (Venezuela), shaped by our mighty world, and currently based in Bilbao (Spain)., I am a fighter for women’s rights and chose slow visual storytelling as my weapon. Mixing rigorous research with intimate stories, I endeavor to make a positive impact through my projects every single day I’m given. I believe in the power of photographs to raise awareness and trigger lasting change towards social justice. In 2020, I became a National Geographic Explorer to enquire about the waves of migrations in Venezuela.
My project Dias Eternos revealing the conditions of women in pretrial detention and prisons in Venezuela, won 1st place in POY Latam in the category “the strength of women”, the 2020 Lucas Dolega International Award as well as the Lumix Photo Award 2020. Social impact through slow visual storytelling is my mission.
Brad Husick is an LHSA Board Member and professional photographer with more than 40 years of experience. Brad’s photos have been published in several magazines and in the New York Times. He was the mission photographer for the first private spaceflight – Space Ship One, and for the launch of the first Ocean Cleanup system in the Pacific. Brad was also a professional sports photographer for three years. He often writes camera, software and lens reviews for online sites and teaches extensively for groups and individuals. Brad is a member of LHSA’s “Ask an Expert” panel.
David Spielman is a well-known and collected New Orleans photographer. He was recently awarded the Louisiana Endowment of the Humanities Documentary Photographer of the Year award. His work is collected and shown throughout the world and he continues to lecture and give presentations about all of his work, offering a very personal view of his New Orleans. Spielman has modest but eccentric tastes. He resides in New Orleans, hates being late, and loves it when a day doesn’t pass without major conversations about food, art, or music. Always ready for a challenge, adventure, or a new project. Looking through a camera at fifteen, an epiphany, in that instant, life gained meaning and direction. Spielman studied in Vienna, where a mentor opened new horizons and awakened dreams. Degas said it best “Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.” He is always looking, looking for answers, looking for questions, looking, and is always skeptical with a perverse sense of humor. Good is never good enough. Hoping to take pictures until the day before he dies. Quietly sensible, yet driven. A straight shooter. No gimmicks or tricks. It is about what is, not what someone else wants. Someone once said, “A dream without a plan is nothing more than a wish.” Anyone can do it but only a few do it well. Works diligently without compromise.
