Join Leica Store Miami and Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer and news veteran Patrick Farrell for an immersive online photo essay workshop that explores how to make singularly provocative images that work together to create a visual narrative.
Drawing from experience and knowledge gained as a photojournalist for the Miami Herald and other news outlets for nearly 40 years, Farrell will work collaboratively with a small group of students on identifying narratives and telling visual stories from beginning to end, addressing light, composition and other technical choices that contribute to a photo essay.
This multi-session workshop will combine group and one-on-one experiences that work toward each student emerging with a compelling, portfolio-ready photo essay. The program is grounded in the work of photo essay master W. Eugene Smith and present-day examples of his legacy. Smith compared making a photo essay to composing a play or music. In that spirit, sessions will address narrative structure, the mechanics of shooting and selecting opening and closing images, and the value of multiple perspectives that relate to one another. Sessions will be personalized to include feedback on students’ existing work and assignments that create or augment individual portfolios. Final photo essays will be edited and presented in the last session for group review and feedback.
