8:30 PM - Learning to Look - David Spielman
As we all know photography is the great educator! It put a face on everything, poverty, war, disasters, birth, death and everything in between. Our brains remember singular images, not video clips. It isn’t just about the equipment or computer programs. Photographers, good photographers know how to look. If you don’t look, you won’t see and if you do see it, how can you take a picture of it. Join us and enhance your looking/seeing skills!
9 AM – 12 PM – Shooting on assignment
12 PM Lunch on your own
1 PM Making Photographs in El Norte - Don Usner
New Mexico Don Usner will describe some of the opportunities and pitfalls of making photographs in Northern New Mexico. As with so many other things, rules learned elsewhere don’t necessarily apply here, in the “far north” of the Latin American cultural sphere and the heart of the Pueblo homeland. Don will share what he has learned after decades of shooting photos and writing about the region.
1:45 PM Shooting on assignment
5:00 - 5:50 PM Finding My Way as a Freelance Photographer. The Trials and Tribulations of Over Forty Years of Shooting - David Spielman
Picking up and looking through a camera at 15 years old, Spielman knew he was going to be a photographer. After graduating college, he moved to New Orleans, having never been there, to begin his life as a freelancer. That’s where the story and adventure begin! The starts and false starts are all part of building the experiences that allow you to shoot better pictures. Failure was never an option.
6:30 PM Evening event at Photo-Eye Gallery
A leisurely stroll or a short ride by car to this well known Santa Fe gallery will be featuring the work of local photographer Steve Fitch. Join your fellow Spring Shoot attendees for an educational and satisfying visit to the Photo-Eye Gallery. 8 AM The Freelance & Personal Project Photographer - Wilbur Norman
What does it take to work and make a living as a freelancer? Is it for you? When should you say ‘yes’ and, as importantly, when ought your response be, ‘No!’ You’re a freelancer and tired of working solely for others who may – or may not, share your vision for the kind of photography in which you wish to engage. You need to stretch your wings! How do you proceed with the work when the client is YOU with your own personal project?
8:45 AM Shooting on assignment
12 PM Lunch on your own
1 PM “The Rangefinder” - with Tony O'Brien
I will be talking about my switching from an SLR to the Leica M-6 when covering the gulf war. The rangefinder camera allows you to slow down and think about what it is you see. Also, the quiet, allowing the photographer to become almost invisible. All in all, just the fun of using a Leica. I will show work on three projects: the Gulf War, work in Guatemala, and a yearlong project at a monastery.
